Addition

Addition

The Stages of Calculation are designed to provide a structured and consistent approach to teaching and learning around addition. In the early stages, pupils start by understanding the concept of counting and recognizing numbers. They learn to count objects, identify numerical symbols, and understand the sequence of numbers. As pupils progress, they move on to basic addition using concrete objects, such as counting blocks or fingers, to physically combine quantities. This stage helps them grasp the idea of combining numbers and understanding the concept of addition as joining two or more groups together. Next, they learn to use mental strategies, such as counting on from the larger number or using known number facts, to solve simple addition problems mentally. Eventually, they develop fluency in addition and begin using written methods, like the traditional column method or the number line, to solve more complex addition problems. These stages provide a solid foundation for further mathematical concepts and problem-solving skills as children continue their education.
